Poker is a card game in which players wager on the relative strength of their hands. The game has many variations, but all involve betting and the forming of a five-card hand. Bets may be made by placing chips or cash in the center of the table, known as the pot. Players may also bluff, attempting to make other players believe that they have a better hand than they actually do. If other players call the bluff, the player making the bet wins the pot.
In most games players must first ante something (amount varies by game). The dealer then shuffles the cards and deals each player one card face down. After this the first of several betting intervals begins. In the betting intervals players place bets into a central pot, with the highest hand winning.
During a hand of poker, each player has two personal cards which they must use to form their best five-card hand along with the five community cards that are shared between all players. The value of a poker hand is in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency, meaning that rarer hands are more valuable than common ones. Poker hand charts can help players understand the odds and probability of a given poker hand, as well as helping them make decisions about when to play or fold.
The rules of poker are complex, but most games follow similar guidelines. Each player must place a bet before they are dealt cards, and then can choose to continue to raise or check their bets during the course of the hand. The highest hand wins the pot, and if no player has a high enough hand, then the pot is divided amongst all other players.

Some poker games feature a wild card, such as the joker or “bug.” This additional card can be used to complete a straight flush (5 cards in a row, like 5-6-7-8-9), but does not count as the fifth ace in a royal flush. Other wild cards are deuces (2s), which are always wild, and the king of diamonds, jack of spades, or jack of hearts, which are each considered to be the highest rank in their respective suit.
During a hand of poker, each person is allowed to open betting by saying “I open.” If someone before you opened, you can say “I call” or simply “call,” which means that you will bet the same amount as them. You must always bet at least the minimum amount to stay in the hand. If you have a lower hand than the player to your right, you can fold instead of calling.
